The "Complete Book of Road Cycling Skills: Your Guide to Riding Faster, Stronger, Longer, and Safer" is a compilation of works from editors at Bicycling Magazine. I picked up a copy for two reasons. First I had an interest in increasing my speed, as my average has remained slow despite thousands of miles. Second there was a picture of the internal parts of the knee, and my knee joints have been the weak link in all my cycling efforts. "Road Cycling" reminds me a lot of those 100 page How to Repair Your Home books that Stanley or Home Depot puts out. Lots of topics but not too much detail or follow-through on any one topic. There were some interesting points, but a lot of it one figures out after riding some serious miles. One thing the authors did touch on was doing a lot of relatively short-distance speed training to help speed on long distances, rather than just logging lots and lots of miles. There were some interesting chapters on eating proper foods, including one with on-the-road recommendations from fast food restaurants! Specifically they were identifying high carbohydrate, low percentage fat items, like Wendy's baked potato. I'd have to say the book is targeting towards people just starting to get serious about cycling.
