Single & Single continues Le Carre's post-Cold War efforts with a story centering around a London-based finance firm that specializes in money laundering. The kind of place familiar to major Bush campaign contributors, but in this story the major clients are Georgian gangsters. Things take a turn for the worse when one of the firms lawyers winds up dead and the remaining partners go into hiding. The protagonist is the estranged son of the firms leader. The son is compelled to re-enter this sordid world as a police informant to ensure the safely of his own child. Le Carre does a good job of unfolding surprises and keeping the story moving. However the ending was a little anti-climatic for my tastes. Seems to be an endemic problem with books these days. All-in-all I give Single & Single a thumbs up.
