Fear and Loathing in America is the second collection of personal and business letters by journalist Hunter S Thompson. His first collection, The Proud Highway covered 1955-67 and inspired me to consider writing as an alternate career. The Proud Highway contained a lot about writing and a love of writing but became a little drug-obsessed near the end. I was relieved to see the second volume get back to political journalism. Covering 1968-76, it contains his experiences at the 1968 Democratic National Convention and during the 1972 Presidential Campaign. The book also effectively documents his run for Sheriff in Aspen, Colorado on the Freak Power ticket. You also get a feel for his slightly out of control lifestyle, and a much better perspective on his actual persona verses public image. I have noted with a sense of irony that I read two volumes of his letters and developed a admiration for a man when I had yet to read a single publication. So you can expect reviews of his real books in the future. I have to say, if your only experience with Hunter S Thomson is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, you really need to check his journalistic works.
