I know Jeremy Walton as a long-time columinst for the BMW Car Club of America's monthly magazine "Roundel". Based in the UK, he lets us know how BMWs are received in Europe and about models not available in the US. But he is also a full time automotive journalist with more than two dozen book titles, and who has done some racing. "BMW Ultimate Drives Volume 1: 1937-1982" covers almost all of the early BMW cars then concentrates on the interesting ones. Each car has a specification list, some background on the model, some history on the specific vehicles pictured, then picture book quality photos. I have a thing for the 507 with its long flowing hood and body barely clearing the rear wheels. The 3.0 CSL is the vintage BMW I wish I had bought when they were still accessible. This car in FULL race trim was nicknamed the Batmobile. And of course the M1, which was the supercar poster I had in my college dorm room when my contemporaries all had the standard Ferrari 308 or Lamborghini Countach. The author mentions driving a M1 in the snow back in the 80's. No one is making new versions of that story. One thing that seemed a little odd was that a huge percentage of the photos were from cars owned by a Bill Young of Colorado Springs. That's fine and all, but I kept thinking maybe the book's title should be the "Bill Young collection". I am looking forward to Vol 2 which will cover 1983 to present, including [I am sure] my beloved Brilliant Red E30 318is.
