I've been a Red Dwarf fan for years and have followed Robert Llewellyn's other pursuits such as his Carpool video podcasts. He wrote a SF book called "News from Gardenia" but I didn't jump on board until he started a second book with UK publisher Unbound. They underwrite authors using Kickstarter-style fundraising and I signed up for a signed hardback copy of "News From The Squares". Sadly I didn't get around to reading it until he released a third book (which I also helped fund, as fanboys have faith). In the first book, present-day Gavin Meckler flies a plane into an unusual cloud formation, and ends up in a eco-utopian future England. At the end he flies back into a similar cloud and enters this book by crash landing in an alternate future England where London is a vast metropolis and the world is now run by women. He travels about 2211 encountering new technology and strange political power paradigms. "News From The Squares" is definitely in the category of "idea books". Things happen and Gavin has experiences, is put at risk, and has an impact, but at times the author seems more interested in describing how a new type of clothing feels or the impacts of certain mass-transit choices, rather than advancing the plot. This is a common theme in Science Fiction, create an alternate initial condition and see what happens. The world run by women solves certain problems (like war), but it is still a little messed up as men and women have more swapped roles than become equals. I do love they consider religion a mental illness and treat it as such. [This had a lot to do with eliminating war]. I wondered if this idea might get an author killed in middle America. The book stands on its own. While I only knew a few details about "News from Gardenia" that never held me back. I do have to admit it is cool to see ones name in print. I'm right there on the first page of "subscribers", middle column, third line. Last names starting with "BA" come in handy. I look forward to the final book in the trilogy, "News From The Clouds" which just arrived.
