Richard Marcinko is a former Navy SEAL who is best known for organizing SEAL Team 6 to specialize in counter-terrorism efforts. That group existed for decades before everyone and their dog learned about them after the Osama bin Laden raid. He wrote an interesting non-fiction book "Rogue Warrior" in 1993 about his experiences in the Navy. After that he delved into a series of fictional books featuring himself going after bad guys around the globe. They were enjoyable, and cast the illusion you were being let in on tactical secrets. Tough guys out thinking and out shooting bad guys. In the end a testosterone equivalent of a Harlequin Romance. The first half a dozen or so were co-written with John Weisman. "Vengence" is the first with a [then] new cowriter Jim DeFelice. I think Mr Marcinko started believing his own advertising. In this story he's testing installation security around the country while being stalked by an evil doer. Then he goes to a parade featuring himself. The world of this book is just too centered on Richard Marcinko. All through it I was confused about the motivation of the bad guys (that's OK). But when I learned the truth, it wasn't satisfying. The story would have held together if he had just stumbled across a terrorist plot. So I would give "Vengence" a pass, but if you really *need* to read about some HALO jumping or storming oil platforms in the North Sea, his other books will deliver.
