Growing up I remember reading columns by Tim Woodward in the Idaho Statesman newspaper. He talked about life's adventures and developments in the area, all with a humorous bent. If ambushed on a street corner I might describe him as a red-neck Dave Barry, but he was more serious, and thoughful. Tim worked as a real reporter for the paper in addition to writing columns. Destination Idaho is Tim's third collection of columns and his last before retiring from the newspaper. My mom lent me her [signed] copy shortly after it was published. The book is divided into three sections: regular columns, profiles of interesting people, descriptions of interesting places. It's really the descriptions of people that form the spirit of the book. You might even say they form the spirit of Tim's career. For example, there's Jan Youren who is a competitive bareback bronco rider, at age 59. Or Garfield Shults who has grown an amazing variety of tree types outside Homedale, ID. And back in civilization, a profile of J.R.Simplot. Tim is a level headed guy and his columns reminded me of a more rational time in Idaho and America in general.
