Marc Maron is a standup comedian who has been working for over 25 years. Despite multiple appearances on Conan and a Showtime special, I learned of his existence in a roundabout way. Jackie Kashian's podcast led me to Jimmy Pardo's and they mentioned dreaming of "Marc Maron numbers" for listenership. So I gave Marc's "WTF" podcast a try, and listen to this day. What The F**k is a 90 minute interview show. Initially he talked with other comedians, often about their past and present interactions. Since then he has branched out to include the art and music world. If you want to capture the true essence of a performer, check them out on Marc's show. I read his book on a nine-hour flight to the United Kingdom. Approaching normal is filled with stories from throughout Marc's life and career. A not insignificant amount of time is spent on his struggle with drug and alcohol abuse. (He has been sober for many years now, and a better person as a result). I knew the book was coming because Marc mentioned working on it. He did a lot of prototype storytelling on the podcast, working through things that turned out were going into the book. As a independent piece of work I recommend Approaching Normal. As someone who has listened to the first 377 podcasts, some of the topics are a little too familiar. Kind of like too little time passing between standup shows.
